Weekends in October 2007: D’Arc,
woman on fire
Presented by Footloose at Shotwell Studios in San Francisco:
Written & Performed by Amanda
Moody
Music Composed by Jay Cloidt
Direction and Dramaturgy by Melissa
Weaver
Cello Performed by Elaine Kreston
Produced by Mary Alice
Fry and Agapé Performance Group
Shotwell Studio is located at 3252-A 19th Street
in San Francisco
at the corner of Shotwell (between South Van Ness and Folsom)
D’Arc offers a surreal inquiry into the costs
of dreams, lived and unlived. Weaving the threads of the Dark Ages with
our own dark times, “D’Arc” depicts a present-day intercession by Saint
Joan of Arc.
We meet Joanne. Home alone, she fixates on letters from her daughter
who vanished while working abroad in a war-torn region. Raging against
loss, Joanne receives bizarre visions through the cold flame of her
television set. It is Saint Joan burning through the TV twilight to
answer her grief. Relating tales of her own battles and trials, Joan
teases and admonishes Joanne, disrupts her obsessions, and challenges
her to listen anew to the call of her own life.

"The Secret Language of Subways"
A song cycle about love and war and New York
Join us to follow the continuing adventures of the Cello ChiX!
Elaine Kreston, Jess Ivry, and Beth Vandervennet, cellists.
“Avant-cabaret” vocalist and composer Amy
X Neuburg, known for her wildly entertaining performances, presents
a new song cycle for voice, cello trio, and live electronics. Conceived
largely while riding on New York subways, these 12 songs use urban imagery
and metaphors of war to explore the deceits, battles and triumphs within
personal relationships. Using drum pads, faders and pedals, Neuburg
processes both her voice and the cellos with effects and real-time looping,
to build up layered harmonies and counterpoints live on stage. Presented
in dramatized concert form with special lighting effects.

Kitka: The
Rusalka Cycle: Songs Between the Worlds
A new vocal-theater project co-created by Kitka,
composer Mariana Sadovska and stage director Ellen Sebastian Chang
Elaine Kreston and Moses Sedler, cellos; Kevin Mummey, percussion
In Slavic folklore, Rusalki are
the restless spirits of women who have died unjust, untimely, or unnatural
deaths. They inhabit the waters, forests, and fields, luring people
to them with their mesmerizing songs and wild laughter. Performed by
the eight powerful vocalists of Kitka together with a trio of instrumentalists,
The Rusalka Cycle is a riveting dream-like journey that weaves traditional
Eastern European folk song and ritual together with original music in
a haunting and evocative stage presentation.

Sat/Sun - April 9 &
10, 2005: The
Music for Peace Project 2005
is a global effort to fill the world with music as a call for peace.
By coordinating a vast number of concerts worldwide between April 8-10,
2005, The Music for Peace Project will bring popular and media attention
to international peace efforts while building a global community of
active, socially conscious artists. Dedicated
to cultivating peace as both a means and an end, The Music for Peace
Project creates a global celebration of peace and provides a voice for
the vibrant community that believes in peaceful solutions for the future.
Any musician can participate. This year's Musicians'
Alliance for Peace sponsored over 174 concerts in 25 countries
spanning every continent (except Antarctica. Anyone know an Antarctica
resident we could contact about that?). This international, non-partisan
call for peace included music from all over the world, shared with audiences
as diverse as the music itself.
Music has the power to inspire compassion
and foster understanding between cultures while deepening the bonds
that form our communities. Together, all musicians participating
in The Music for Peace Project are helping to create a global community
of musicians that cannot be ignored. "Artists are messengers whose
responsibility is to unite the world that will lead not to destruction,
but to transformation"
